personal experience There has always been something magical about the Eastern and Carolina Hemlock forests. I remember visiting the Limberlost area of SNP in 90'-91'-92'. For those of you unfammiliar, it was an area of huge old growth hemlocks with an understory of mosses, ferns, and other shade loving plants. It is all dead now. I can not go back there, or many of the other areas I used to frequent. It is far too depressing. The site of these old giants skeletons and their progeny withering away is/was too much for me to bear. In the place of these majestic old "friends" are Alanthus, and other invasives. The stream banks have been denuded from the falling giants and the area is noticeably warmer. What was once a verdant paradise has begun to take on the appearance of an abandoned overgrown parking lot. As an avid backpacker, I must travel further and further away to visit areas with still living hemlocks. I often find myself wondering if there could be an intermediate species that could be planted such as white pine, red spruce or a HWA resistant cross breed of Eastern / Carolina / Western or other type to stabilize the ecosystem untill the Hemlocks can be brought back. I know this is wishful thinking, but something needs to be done. I have noticed in several areas that have suffered total devastation by the HWA, specimens that appear unaffected. Could there be naturaly resistant individuals, or only trees yet to be infected? The preservation of existing stands, the relamation of affected hemlock dependant ecosystems, and the search for a long term economical and sustainable sollution are causes to which I am prepared to dedicate my life. What better way to leave your mark on a planet that as a species we have defiled, degraded, and disrespected? Thank you to those that have already devoted their time and resources to getting out the message and helped stem the tide of devestation. A donation is forthcoming.
